Protective or protectionist? The new EU rules on Foreign Direct Investment
December 03, 2020
The EU framework for screening foreign direct investment (FDI) became fully operational on 11 October 2020.
Designed to foster Europe’s strategic autonomy, the new FDI rules reinforce member states’ ability to block investments on the grounds of security and public order, affecting a wide range of sectors including infrastructure (energy, ports, airports, and communications), health and financial services.
But what does this mean for entities considering investment into Europe, and for European organisations considering transactions with non-EU parties?
In this webinar, experts from Gianni Origoni Grippo Cappelli & Partners and Control Risks will provide an overview of the framework, the political drivers, and considerations for future investments.
Our discussion will include:
● An overview of the framework, including key differences between member states
● Political drivers underlying tighter investment screening rules within the EU
● Impact of new regulation on foreign investment, including considerations such as increased due diligence and risk assessments for deals
