04 November 2024 – Massimo Sterpi, Head of GOP’s Intellectual Property, TMT and Cybersecurity department, presented the document “Guidelines for Use of AI by Lawyers” during the 68th UIA Congress, held in Paris from 30 October to 3 November, 2024.
The “Guidelines for Use of AI by Lawyers” is a ground-breaking document commissioned to Massimo by Jacqueline Scott, President of the UIA, last year when the Organization launched a dedicated AI Task Force (AITF), of which our GOP Partner was appointed as Chair.
Following a year of work, on Thursday 31 October, during the UIA Congress, the final document was presented to the lawyers, jurists, academics and representatives of international organisations who attended the event.
This document, the first to be commissioned by an international lawyers’ association, has global implications, as so far similar guidelines have been drafted by national lawyers’ associations in accordance with the national laws of the country in which they live and work.
The “Guidelines for Use of AI by Lawyers” are the result of an in-depth analysis and of an ongoing dialogue with more than 20 experienced lawyers operating in different parts of the world.
They are based on principles of working knowledge and awareness of the opportunities and limitations of AI.
The guidelines also take into account the need to respect the confidentiality of the issues dealt with, and the need for human intervention and control at all stages of the use of AI to review the content it produces.
The final document of the guidelines was written by Massimo with the assistance of GOP Associate Maria Di Gravio, who works in the department he heads.
